Two men suspected of burglarizing cars in the past week were arrested near an apartment complex Tuesday morning, police said.

Booked on suspicion of burglary were Pris Varga, 30, identified as a transient, and Arturo Ortiz, 21, of Fullerton.

La Habra Police Sgt. Steve Costanzo said patrol officers Dan Pratt and Chris Koelber spotted the two men in the 100 block of East Montwood Avenue shortly after midnight. Ortiz ran off as the officers approached, Costanzo said.

Pratt and Koelber, using a police dog, were searching the neighborhood when Ortiz was discovered hiding in a bush and was caught, according to Costanzo.

He said police later found that the car the suspects were driving was filled with merchandise taken from at least three auto burglaries.

Costanzo credited residents in an apartment complex on East Montwood with helping police find the suspects.

The residents “heard some noises like someone was working on a car, looked out the window, saw the men in the carport, thought that was suspicious and called police,” Costanzo said.

Ortiz and Varga were being held in the city jail in lieu of $25,000 bail each.
