Alhambra : Building Exemptions Sought

Share

Eight landowners and their representatives appealed to the City Council this week for exemptions from temporary building restrictions placed on properties Jan. 11.

Some investors wanted to develop condominiums on their property; some residents hoped to build additional units on their land. All were stymied by a 45-day emergency measure that prohibits new multiunit residences on lots now zoned for such development.

The landowners’ confusion and frustration stemmed from the City Council’s ongoing attempt to slow Alhambra’s population growth.

While the study progresses, the City Council has passed two temporary measures to limit growth: Two dwellings can be built on lots designated for multiple residences and one dwelling can be built on lots zoned for two. The City Council may grant exemptions to the temporary standards.

A public hearing on the 45-day moratorium is scheduled during the Feb. 22 City Council meeting.
