OJAI : Stretch of Highway Reopens After Slide

Share

A stretch of California 150 west of Ojai was reopened Thursday after a massive rain-related landslide closed the road two weeks ago, state highway officials announced.

The slide, which occurred two miles west of the Lake Casitas ranger station on Jan. 15, had halted traffic through the Casitas Pass. The highway is a frequently used shortcut between Ojai and Carpinteria.

California Department of Transportation crews used 13 trucks, three bulldozers and two loaders to haul away 22,000 cubic yards of soil from the roadway, said Russell Snyder, a Caltrans spokesman.

Traffic was allowed to use the road at night beginning Monday, but the crews were not able to reopen the two-lane highway for daylight traffic until 2:45 p.m. Thursday, Snyder said.
