A 26-year-old Ontario man was killed Monday when he fell five stories from the roof of Anaheim Memorial Hospital while repairing a window, police said.

Rodney Attema was pulling up a steel cable used in the scaffolding outside the building at 1111 La Palma Ave. when he stepped backward off the edge, Officer Mike Brannigan said. Attema, who worked for a Long Beach glass company, had completed work with another man and was in the process of retrieving their equipment, Brannigan said.

“Evidently he didn’t know he was so close to the edge,” Brannigan said.

Attema fell into bushes near the hospital emergency room. He was immediately spotted by several paramedics standing nearby, Brannigan said. But Attema had suffered extensive internal injuries and died at the hospital at 4:15 p.m., Brannigan said.
