COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : No. 3 Kansas Has No Problem With Missouri

Kansas didn’t shoot much better than Missouri on Monday night, but the No. 3-ranked Jayhawks dominated on the boards and at the free throw line.

Eric Pauley scored 18 points as Kansas beat Missouri, 86-69, in a Big Eight Conference game at Lawrence, Kan. It was the Jayhawks’ fifth consecutive victory over Missouri and extended their conference home winning streak to 19.

Kansas outrebounded Missouri, 47-31, and outscored the Tigers 17-3 from the line.

“I told them before the game, let’s have a career rebounding night,” Kansas Coach Roy Williams said. “I believe you’ve got to have that relentless rebounding attitude. We’re not the biggest team in the league or the highest jumping, but we emphasized it enough to help us.”

Steve Woodberry, making his second start in place of the injured Darrin Hancock, scored 17 points and had eight rebounds for Kansas, which improved its record to 18-2 overall and 5-0 in the Big Eight.

Missouri Coach Norm Stewart did not start Jevon Crudup, the Tigers’ second-leading scorer at 15.5 points per game. Crudup was given his fourth technical of the season Saturday against Nebraska, and Stewart apparently sat him down in order to get him to improve his on-court behavior.

Mark Atkins led Missouri (13-6, 3-2) with 30 points.

Kansas went on a 17-2 run to take a 43-26 lead with 5:40 to play in the first half. Missouri missed 16 of its last 18 shots in the half, and trailed 49-34 at intermission.

No. 4 Cincinnati 74, Miami, Ohio 68--Nick Van Exel tied the score in regulation with a layup, then scored nine points of his 23 points during overtime as the Bearcats rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit for the nonconference victory at Oxford, Ohio.

Cincinnati (16-1) won its 13th consecutive game, the longest streak in Division I, despite trailing most of the game. Van Exel’s layup tied the score, 54-54, with 48 seconds to play, and Miami (10-5) turned the ball over with four seconds left, sending it to overtime.

Miami wasted a chance to pull off its first upset of a ranked team in more than nine years.

St. John’s 79, No. 23 Georgetown 61--The Redmen remained in first place in the Big East Conference with the victory at New York.

St. John’s (12-5, 7-2) has won seven of its last eight and is eight spots higher in the conference than they were expected to be according to the coaches’ preseason poll.

Sergio Luyk, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward, started a 16-0 run by the Redmen when he made a three-point shot with 11:04 to play that put St. John’s ahead, 45-42.

Georgetown (12-5, 5-4) missed five shots and committed two turnovers during the run.

Othella Harrington led Georgetown, which lost for the third time in four games, with 21 points.

OTHER GAMES

Tony Dumas scored 30 to lead Missouri-Kansas City (10-10) to a 99-77 upset victory over Wisconsin Milwaukee (18-2) at Kansas City. Wisconsin Milwaukee entered the game with the best record in Division I. . . . Marvin Orange made four free throws and Cedric Moore made three in the final three minutes as Alabama (11-6) held on for a 59-54 nonconference victory over East Carolina (6-12) at Tuscaloosa, Ala.
