GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Pearson Scores 20 in First Half to Lead Woodbridge Past Irvine

Melanie Pearson had 20 points in the first half as Woodbridge rolled past Irvine, 74-23, in a Sea View League girls’ basketball game Wednesday at Irvine.

Woodbridge (16-5, 9-1 in Sea View League) remained a game behind first-place Santa Margarita. The Warriors led, 16-3, after a quarter and 38-10 after the second. Woodbridge made 23 of 30 free throws.

Woodbridge point guard Florencia Luppani, a returning all-county player who is recovering from early-season knee surgery, made her first field goals since returning last week, scoring five points.

Shawnee Stevens had nine points for Irvine (1-9 in league).

In other Sea View League games:

University 67, Tustin 29--Jennifer Stanley had 16 points and 12 rebounds for host University (10-9, 6-4). Tustin is 8-12 and 4-6.

Corona del Mar 44, Saddleback 30--Mollie Flint had 31 points for Corona del Mar (12-7, 5-5).

Newport Harbor 73, Santa Margarita 48--Michaela Ross scored 28 points for Newport Harbor (15-5, 10-0), which outscored Santa Margarita by 15 points in the third quarter.

In the Century League:

Villa Park 63, Foothill 13--Maureen Skehan had a triple-double for host Villa Park (11-6, 6-1). Skehan finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 15 steals. She made six of nine shots from the field and 11 of 12 free throws. Tara Earl had 17 points for Villa Park.

El Modena 46, Santa Ana Valley 36--Jamie Shine scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for El Modena (8-9, 5-2).

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 40, Sunny Hills 27--Martha Hernandez had 20 points for La Habra (5-2 in league). Beth McClean had eight points for Sunny Hills (7-12, 3-4).

Troy 62, Buena Park 13--Janea Butler scored 12 points to lead Troy (18-3, 7-0).

Sonora 36, Fullerton 28--Chris Nonis had 15 points for host Sonora (7-13, 2-5), which rallied from a five-point halftime deficit. Sonora led, 19-14, at the half but then outscored Fullerton, 14-3, in the third quarter. Fullerton is 8-13 and 4-3.

In the Garden Grove League:

Rancho Alamitos 81, Bolsa Grande 32--Lisa Inomata and Akilah Rodgers had 14 points each for Rancho Alamitos (18-4, 10-0). Ruth Yau had 14 for Bolsa Grande (3-16, 1-9).

In the Olympic League:

Whittier Christian 59, Capistrano Valley Christian 55 (OT)--Alana Kempton scored 10 of Whittier Christian’s 14 points in overtime to lead the Heralds (12-8, 6-4). Kempton, who scored 27 points, made two free throws in the last seconds to seal the victory.

Ivana Kovacic had 21 points and 11 rebounds for Capistrano Valley Christian (13-5, 6-2).

Orange Lutheran 52, Brethren Christian 48--Kristin Weddick had 18 points for Orange Lutheran (11-9, 5-4). Joilin Hunt and Tammy Sneed each scored 11 points for Brethren Christian.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 87, Valencia 26--Nicole Erickson and Colleen Hudson each scored 28 points for Brea-Olinda (21-2, 7-0), the county’s No. 1-ranked team. Nikki Kubota scored 18 points for Valencia.

Magnolia 51, Anaheim 27--Stoni Isaacks had 10 points and Barbara Mathews had eight for Magnolia (9-9, 3-4), which had at least one point from every player on its roster.

Debbie Tuua had 12 points for Anaheim (0-7 in league).

Western 40, Savanna 38--Kwanzaa Gibson scored 21 points for Western (10-11, 3-4), which rallied from a six-point deficit in the final two minutes. Sara Works led Savanna (10-11, 5-2) with 13 points.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 39, Laguna Hills 25--Laura Czingula had 11 points and 16 rebounds for host Estancia (13-6, 5-2), which led, 12-2, at the end of the first quarter and, 27-5, at the half.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 57, Mater Dei 46--Sophomore Jennifer Hill had seven assists for host Mission Viejo (13-8, 3-4). Maggie Gorska had 23 points and 15 rebounds for Mission Viejo, which led by as many 13 points in the third quarter.

Leticia Oseguera had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Mater Dei (14-6, 4-3).

Dana Hills 58, El Toro 42--Karun Grossman had 23 points and 14 rebounds for visiting Dana Hills (12-6, 3-4). Adara Newidouski added 17 points for Dana Hills.
