POMONA : Students End Occupation of Pomona College Offices
Administrators at Pomona College were back in their offices Wednesday after students ended a two-day occupation of Alexander Hall that secured a commitment from the five Claremont Colleges to push minority recruitment for faculty positions.
A group of students who seized the administration building and slapped on banners and signs declaring the offices closed “due to racism” vacated the premises at 1 a.m. Wednesday after a series of negotiating sessions with college administrators.
Pomona College President Peter W. Stanley said that, apart from a broken lock and a plugged toilet, the two-story building was undamaged. And, while the takeover was disruptive, he said, it started a dialogue on racial issues and enabled the colleges to articulate their commitments to diversity.
