Jurisprudence
The California chapter of the National Organization for Women will mark today’s National Women in Sports Day by suing the California State University Board of Trustees and Chancellor Barry Munitz, alleging that athletic departments in the 19-school system are in violation of state gender equity laws.
“I guess we’ll learn whether or not they’ve learned from past mistakes,” said Jared Huffman, representing NOW. “Basically, we’re hoping they realize this is a repeat of the Cal State Fullerton case.”
Huffman was one of the lawyers who sued Fullerton last year after the school dropped women’s volleyball. The suit led to a settlement in which Fullerton agreed to reinstate volleyball and adopt a 10-year gender equity plan.
