GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Marina Rally Stops Fountain Valley

The county’s fifth-ranked team, Marina, needed a rally in the last quarter to get by Fountain Valley, 45-40, in a Sunset League girls’ basketball game Thursday night.

Marina (18-4, 11-1 in league) outscored Fountain Valley, 10-7, in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory and remain in first place in the Sunset League.

Aimee Periolat had 14 points for the Vikings while Nicole Strange led Fountain Valley (12-11, 6-6) with 20 points.

In other Sunset League games:

Edison 65, Westminster 51--Joan Paje scored 25 points and Janette Oriza had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Edison (13-9, 7-5). Rachel Kavan scored 15 points for Westminster (5-16, 2-10).

Huntington Beach 79, Rosary 47--Deana Itow had 10 points, 16 assists and 10 steals and Clare Walker scored 14 of her 28 points in the first quarter for host Huntington Beach (11-1 in league). Addy Benard had 15 points for Rosary.

Ocean View 38, Santa Ana 35--Farah Magee scored 14 points and had 13 rebounds for Ocean View (13-10, 7-5).

In the Century League:

Canyon 48, El Modena 39--Lisa Petronis and Rona Rathod each scored 11 points for host Canyon (6-2 in league). Jamie Shine had 16 points and 15 rebounds for El Modena (8-10, 5-3).

Villa Park 62, Orange 28--Maureen Skeehan had 12 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals for visiting Villa Park. Tara Earl added 15 points for the Spartans (12-6, 7-1).

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 60, Loara 36--Melanie Wall scored 14 points for Esperanza (10-11, 2-6).

Katella 51, Cypress 43--Chris Carrillo and Rachel Davis each scored 16 points for Katella (17-4, 6-2). Jessica Eggleston scored 19 points for Cypress (5-3 in league).

In the Freeway League:

Troy 48, Fullerton 23--Audra Gamst had 10 points and Dinah Shah had eight points and five assists for host Troy (19-3, 8-0).

Sunny Hills 59, Sonora 48--Darci Raphael scored 22 points for host Sunny Hills (8-13, 4-4). Chris Nonis led Sonora (8-13, 2-6) with 18 points.

La Habra 55, Buena Park 28--Martha Hernandez had 10 points and seven assists for La Habra (11-10, 6-2). Carrie Arakaki scored 12 points for Buena Park (0-8 in league).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 113, Anaheim 26--Nicole Erickson scored 32 points and Sarah Beckley had 19 for Brea-Olinda (22-2, 8-0), the No. 1-ranked team in the county. Anaheim is 0-17, 0-8.

Savanna 47, Magnolia 43--Stacey Aliff had 15 points and seven assists and Sara Works had 15 points and 15 rebounds for Savanna (11-11, 6-2). Stoni Isaacks scored 13 points for Magnolia (3-5 in league).

Western 50, Valencia 46--Jenny Christensen scored 21 points and Kwanzaa Gibson added 16 for Western (11-11, 4-4). Nikki Kubota scored 15 points for Valencia.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Century 39, Laguna Beach 34--Ruth Vallejo scored 12 points for Century (11-10, 4-4). Cole Stephens had nine points for host Laguna Beach (7-13, 1-7).

Costa Mesa 73, Laguna Hills 24--Olivia DiCamilli had 19 points, nine rebounds, 10 assists and eight steals for Costa Mesa (20-4, 8-0), ranked third in the county. Heather Robinson, who scored 19 points, held Amy Feniello to five points. Feniello scored 23 points for Laguna Hills (5-16, 1-7) in the teams’ last game.

Estancia 42, Trabuco Hills 33--Jenny Drake scored 11 points for Estancia (6-2 in league). April Kargel had 12 points for Trabuco Hills (11-11, 4-4).

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 77, El Toro 15--Jennifer Garrett had 14 points and 24 rebounds and Susan Scott and Stacey Howes each added 14 points for visiting Capistrano Valley (18-3, 8-0). The Cougars, ranked second in the county, clinched the league title.

Mater Dei 42, Dana Hills 33--Leticia Oseguera had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Allison Luckey had 12 points for visiting Mater Dei (15-6, 5-3). Adara Newidouski scored 14 points for Dana Hills.

San Clemente 62, Mission Viejo 55--Michelle Macintyre finished with 24 points and eight rebounds and Dana Netherby scored 18 points for San Clemente (13-9, 5-3). Kortney Okura scored 21 points, Maggie Gorska 18, and Amy Chris had five blocked shots and 14 rebounds for Mission Viejo (13-9, 3-5).
