SUFFRAGETTE CITY: In “Backstage Pass,” the new book about her life with David Bowie and the decadent upper crust of the hip ‘70s pop world, Angie Bowie--who was divorced in 1980 from the rock star--has no qualms at all about detailing many of the alleged fast-lane excesses of the pop world.

So it’s surprising that she clams up when asked by Pop Eye to answer this simple question: What is the chameleonic star really like?

“I don’t really know if I could draw that kind of picture,” she replied. “I know the answer, but that’s discretionary, isn’t it? I think that (information) is kind of privileged.”

Her only suggestion, in terms of insight into the “real” David Bowie, is to check out some of his early recordings. “In ‘The Wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud,’ ‘Changes,’ ‘Kooks’ and other songs in the first four albums, you see a big side of him which relates to children and is very loving and sweet,” she said. “In ‘The Man Who Sold the World,’ you see his concern about inheriting the insanity that was part of his family background.”
