A jewelry store owner in MainPlace/Santa Ana surprised armed robbers Tuesday night when he pulled out a gun and fired, police said.

Three men entered Goldsmith Jewelers, on the second floor of the mall, at 7:35 p.m., said Santa Ana Police Lt. Earl Porter.

“They came into the store and were acting suspiciously,” Porter said. “A clerk told them that the store was closing and asked them to leave. At that point, one of them produced a small-caliber handgun and another one produced a sawed-off shotgun.”

The store owner, who was standing in another part of the store, pulled out his own .45 automatic shotgun and fired once at them.

The three men dropped their guns and ran, police said. One of them hunched over before he fled, leading police to believe that he may have been shot, Porter said.

Moments later, police arrested one suspect in the mall’s parking lot. His name was not available Tuesday night. The others escaped.

Porter said there were no customers inside the store at the time.
