The two top goal scorers in the NHL, both from the former Soviet Union, faced off in Buffalo on Friday night.

The Vancouver Canucks had Pavel Bure while the Sabres went with Alexander Mogilny. Bure won, assisting on all three goals to beat the Sabres, 3-1.

“We like to think that all our players respond to team play,” Canuck Coach Pat Quinn said. “Sometimes your scorer isn’t going to score, but then it’s his job to get the puck to someone who can. We tried to do that tonight.”

It was the second time Bure outplayed his Russian-born counterpart this season. Bure scored two goals and Mogilny was shut out during a Vancouver victory over Buffalo last month.

Mogilny had one assist Friday night and has 86 points, including a league-leading 54 goals, in 48 games for the Sabres this season. Bure has 47 goals in 56 games.

Hartford 6, Winnipeg 2--Nick Kypreos scored twice and Sean Burke made 43 saves as the Whalers ended a four-game losing streak, at Winnipeg.

Eric Weinrich, Pat Verbeek, Yvon Corriveau and Terry Yake also scored for Hartford. Rookie Teemu Selanne scored both Winnipeg goals during the third period.

New York Rangers 4, New York Islanders 3--Adam Graves’ two goals at New York City helped the Rangers end a six-game winless streak.

Graves’ second goal, his 23rd of the season, came at 9:28 of the third period with the Rangers on a power play. That goal made the score 4-1 and helped the Rangers withstand a late flurry by the Islanders, who got goals from Derek King and Jeff Norton in the last six minutes.

Quebec 4, Calgary 4--Martin Rucinsky’s power-play goal midway through the third period enabled the Nordiques to tie the Flames at Calgary.

Rucinsky scored with 9:20 to play for the Nordiques, who are 14-7-7 on the road. Calgary is 5-0-1 in its last six games. The Flames took a 4-3 lead 36 seconds into the third on Theoren Fleury’s 22nd goal. Gary Roberts had his second consecutive two-goal game for Calgary.

Edmonton 6, San Jose 0--The Sharks tied the NHL record of 17 consecutive defeats with a loss to the Oilers at Edmonton.

The second-year Sharks will break the 1974-75 record of the expansion Washington Capitals if they lose Sunday in Winnipeg. Edmonton’s Bill Ranford made 28 saves for his first shutout of the season and the seventh of his career.

Esa Tikkanen scored a short-handed goal 59 seconds into the game for the Oilers. Also scoring for Edmonton were Craig Simpson, Brian Benning, Martin Gelinas, Brad Werenka and Shjon Podein.
