In Tuneup Race, Earnhardt Has Another Good Day at Daytona
Dale Earnhardt gave himself a final tuneup for today’s Daytona 500 by running away with his fourth consecutive Goody’s 300 race for Busch Grand National stock cars at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday.
Earnhardt led 87 of the 120 laps and averaged 146.441 m.p.h. to win $39,375. It was the sixth time the five-time Winston Cup champion has won the Goody’s race for late model cars, which weigh about 600 pounds less than the Winston Cup cars that will run today.
At one point, after a lengthy pit stop, Earnhardt was 25th in a single-file line of cars. It took him only eight laps to take his Chevrolet to the front. Pole-sitter Ken Schrader finished second, with Harry Gant third and Terry Labonte fourth.
The early pace was so fast that after 40 laps, Earnhardt’s average speed of 186.529 m.p.h. was faster than Schrader’s pole speed of 186.512.
