COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Ward Loses to Texas in His Titan Debut
Jon Ward, a former standout at Huntington Beach High, lost his collegiate pitching debut Sunday as Texas beat Cal State Fullerton, 5-1, in a nonconference game in Austin, Tex.
Ward allowed three hits, two runs--both earned--and walked five in four innings. He struck out two. He left trailing, 2-1.
Fullerton got its only run in the fifth, thanks to a throwing error. Texas (7-2), which scored twice in the fourth, got single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh.
Brooks Kieschnick (3-1) pitched a seven-hitter with four strikeouts for fifth-ranked Texas. He also had three hits, including two doubles.
The sixth-ranked Titans (3-3) left seven runners on base, six in scoring position.
In another nonconference game:
UCLA 7, Chapman 5--Sam Torreira had a pinch-hit, two-run single in the ninth, but Chapman’s rally fell short at Hart Park in Orange.
Chapman (3-5) scored three runs in the first inning, but 17th-ranked UCLA (2-0) got five in the fourth and single runs in the seventh and ninth.
