LA HABRA : Police Warn Citizens of Phony Solicitors
Authorities are warning residents to be on guard when telephone solicitors call asking for money to benefit the city’s police force.
The Police Department never solicits funds over the telephone, officials said.
“If people are being asked to give money, I recommend that they ask for a name, address, phone number, some type of literature and a tax identification number,” said Cpl. Vernon Mangels, president of the La Habra Police Assn.
Chief Steven Staveley said residents recently have been calling the Police Department to find out about a group that claims it is raising money for disabled police officers.
“We don’t know anything about the group,” he said.
