RAIN CHECK: The Santa Ana office of Caltrans has a suggestion before you head onto the freeways in the rain: Call its weather hot line to see which freeways might be suffering the most adverse conditions. The number is 1 (800) 427-ROAD (that’s 7623). A pleasant voice will tell you to punch in the number of the freeway you’re interested in, then follow it by the pound sign. “It’s where motorists can get the most up to date information,” says Steve Saville of the Caltrans Santa Ana office.
