The City Council has given final approval to plans for a fire station on Baldwin Avenue.

“It will mean a significant improvement in local fire protection,” Fire Chief Gerald Gardner said. He said the $2.8-million facility will be built next to the existing station at 1630 S. Baldwin Ave. and will be in use by March, 1994.

“The city has been planning and saving to build this station for 10 years,” he said.

The new station will house a pump and ladder truck capable of reaching taller buildings’ upper floors, a fire prevention bureau and more living space for firefighters, Gardner said.

The city has 48 firefighters and 15 paramedics at the Baldwin Avenue station and two other stations at 710 Santa Anita Ave. and 79 W. Orange Grove Blvd.
