Compton : Officials Try to Cope After Costly Fire at High School
Arson investigators expect to determine by today the source of a fire that gutted two laboratories and four classrooms in the science building at Dominguez High School in Compton.
No one was injured in the blaze, which erupted shortly after midnight Monday. Fire officials estimate damage to the building at more than $1.5 million and damage to lab equipment, computers and textbooks at $500,000.
School administrators said that vacant classrooms will be used until the damaged classrooms are repaired but that the science equipment probably will not be replaced until next year.
“What the school is going to do for lab equipment is being worked out,” said Fred Easter, assistant superintendent for school services. “The school will probably have to be very creative in coming up with a way to replace it.”
Easter said school officials may draw on resources from other schools or area community colleges.
