Security was tightened at Nogales High School after a 17-year-old youth was shot Tuesday while standing on the Rowland Heights school’s baseball field.
Jerry Moreno, a student at Santana Continuation School, was wounded in the chest after a shot rang out at 11:30 a.m. Moreno was standing with a group of 10 boys, also not believed to be Nogales students, on the field, about 300 yards from classrooms, authorities said.
Moreno was reported in fair condition Wednesday at Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina. The injured youth was not a known gang member, a Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokesman said. The other boys scattered after the shooting. Investigators said they have no idea where the shot came from and lack a motive and suspects.
In the wake of the shooting, Rowland Unified School District officials said three of five gates to the fenced campus will be locked for the next week and campus security guards have been told to be more vigilant.
