A 30-year old Burbank man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and child abuse after an altercation that left four people, including the suspect, with cuts and bruises, Burbank police said Wednesday.

David Earl Groom of the 1000 block of North Orchard Drive in Burbank was being held in the Los Angeles County Jail, Sgt. Bob Brode said.

The incident began just after 4 p.m. Tuesday at Groom’s sister’s house on the 300 block of West Elmwood Avenue, about a quarter of a mile from the suspect’s home, Brode said. Groom, his sister and brother-in-law had been drinking, and arguments broke out before Groom went outside, where he allegedly kicked his 8-year-old niece and pushed her to the ground. Police said they did not know why Groom assaulted the girl.

Groom then began fighting inside the house with his brother-in-law and threatened him with a kitchen knife.

Groom was stopped minutes later several blocks from his sister’s house and treated at Thompson Memorial Medical Center for cuts, welts and bruises and a three-inch gash on his forehead.

Minutes before receiving the call about the fight, police were summoned when Groom argued with a clerk at a liquor store on South Victory Boulevard.
