Durwood Scott; Retired Newspaper Editor
Durwood (Scotty) Scott, retired assistant managing editor of the Daily News of Los Angeles, has died in a convalescent home in Opelika, Ala. He was 70.
A former Van Nuys resident, Scott died Sunday of complications of pneumonia, said his wife, Louise Scott of Lanett, Ala.
Born in Lanett, Scott worked as sports editor at a newspaper in his hometown and later did newscasts and sports reporting on radio. He came to California in 1952 and was hired as editor of Mission Publications in San Fernando. Scott later joined the Valley News, which would later become the Daily News, as a reporter, working his way up to assistant city editor and later assistant managing editor. As an investigative reporter, Scott wrote award-winning articles on the treatment of Los Angeles County prisoners. He retired in 1984 and moved to Alabama in 1991.
Scott is survived by his wife of 52 years.
A funeral was held Wednesday in Valley, Ala. Donations can be made in Scott’s name to the First Christian Church in Lanett, Ala.
