A woman dies every 11 minutes of breast cancer in the United States, according to reports from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. To help fight this killer, the group has teamed with Tiffany & Co. to raise $100,000 this year. The jeweler has specially designed a silk scarf to sell with a 3.4-ounce bottle of its trademark perfume ($100 with 10% benefiting the foundation), and will distribute pink ribbons and educational pamphlets (early mammogram detection could decrease the toll by 30%). “We’ve never done anything like this,” says Jo Ellen Quells of Tiffany in South Coast Plaza. “This is our way of commemorating their efforts in an innovative way.”

Once Forever

Like life’s other rituals, a christening has a long tradition. Because traditionalists seek something classic for their newborns, Elizabeth Martinez, owner of EM Originals in Brea Mall, suggests a romantic, Victorian-inspired gown. The French-designed baptismal gowns are of cotton batiste decorated with Swiss embroidery and battenberg lace ($69 to $195). Notes Martinez: “They’re collector pieces to pass on through the family, an heirloom.”

Kickers for Kids

The children’s Western wear business has “increased phenomenally,” says Boot Barn spokesman Rial Chew from the chain’s Placentia headquarters. Especially popular are cowboy boots. Check out Laredo’s vintage-style boots with cow head and star cutouts ($50 to $53). Chew hopes that a person wearing boots as a young’un will grow into a boot-sporting adult.

A major mistake many plus-size women make is “camouflaging” their figure with the layered look, says wardrobe consultant Carol Baier of Tustin-based Carann, which offers the latest styles in hard-to-find larger sizes. Her advice: “Providing you have a waist, dress with a waist in mind or you’ll end up looking dumpy,” she adds. Otherwise go for a straight silhouette.
