LOS ALAMITOS : Panel Urges No Boulevard Bike Lanes

After more than two years of study, a citizens panel is recommending to the City Council that it not proceed with a plan to build bike lanes on Los Alamitos Boulevard.

It is “not feasible” and “potentially costly” to build the bikes lanes, the Traffic Commission said in its recommendation to the City Council, which will take up the matter on Monday.

The bikes lanes along the two-mile stretch of Los Alamitos Boulevard, starting in Seal Beach and ending near Hawaiian Gardens, was intended to link with a countywide bike trail system envisioned by the Orange County Transportation Authority.

OCTA funded the study with a $37,000 grant in July, 1990. Because the project will be scrapped if the council agrees with the recommendation, the city will reimburse the transportation agency the remaining unused funds of about $15,000, said Mark A. Wagner, Los Alamitos director of recreation and community services.

“There is no reason to go forward,” Wagner said. “The bike lanes are not feasible.”

Wagner said that City Engineer Arnt G. Quist found that the section of the street from Howard Avenue to Katella Avenue was too narrow to add the bike lanes. In other sections, bike lanes may be added if street parking was eliminated.

Additional right of way would be needed to construct the bike lanes from Howard Avenue to Katella Avenue, Wagner said. That could be costly, he said.
