NHL ROUNDUP : Islanders Keep Penguins’ Losing Streak Alive, 4-2

New York goalie Glenn Healy made 29 saves and Pierre Turgeon scored three goals as the Islanders handed the Pittsburgh Penguins their third consecutive loss, 4-2, Saturday at Uniondale, N.Y.

Healy’s performance came on a day that the Islanders retired former goaltender Billy Smith’s number in a pregame ceremony before a capacity crowd of 16,297.

Healy, whose last start was a 6-5 loss to Boston on Jan. 30, turned away all 13 shots by Pittsburgh in the first period.

“I just wanted to go out and have fun,” Healy said. “I was anxious to play, and I really felt comfortable out there. It was good for me that they got some chances right away. It gave me the opportunity to get right into game. I was a little rusty.”

Hartford 7, Edmonton 3--Forward Pat Verbeek scored three goals and rookie defenseman Dan Keczmer added two more to lead the Whalers over the Oilers at Hartford.

Verbeek, who has eight goals in the last seven games, scored twice in the second period and once in the third as Hartford broke a 1-1 tie.

Minnesota 5, Philadelphia 2--Neal Broten, Minnesota’s all-time leader in short-handed goals, scored another as the North Stars turned an early 2-0 deficit into a victory over the Flyers at Minnesota.

Minnesota goalie Jon Casey made 26 saves to record his first victory since Jan. 28. Mark Tinordi, Russ Courtnall, Ulf Dahlen, Mike McPhee and Broten all scored in the second period, in which the North Stars outshot the Flyers, 14-5.

Quebec 5, Tampa Bay 2--Mike Ricci scored two goals to lead the Nordiques over the Lightning at Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In an NHL neutral-site game, Ricci’s performance was overshadowed by an injury to Quebec goaltender Ron Hextall, who left the game with a strained a muscle in his left thigh. The Nordiques expect him to be out two weeks.

Montreal 5, Ottawa 4--Vincent Damphousse’s 30th goal, with 3:59 to play, gave the Canadiens a victory over the expansion Senators at Montreal.

Ottawa, which is 0-29 on the road, had fought back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game at 4-4 in the second period. The Senators are eight losses away from the record of 37 consecutive road defeats, set by Washington in its expansion season of 1974-75.

Vancouver 4, Winnipeg 2--The Canucks ended an 0-for-23 slump on the power play when Cliff Ronning scored in the third period to highlight their victory over the Jets at Vancouver.

Ronning’s goal broke a 2-2 tie and gave Vancouver its first power-play goal since Feb. 2. Trevor Linden, Robert Kron and Petr Nedved also scored for the Canucks.

Boston 4, Toronto 4--Dave Andreychuk’s goal with 2:40 remaining forced a tie with the Bruins at Toronto, as the Maple Leafs stretched their undefeated streak to six games.

Doug Gilmour gained his 17th point in his last five games with an assist on Andreychuk’s goal. Wendel Clark, Mark Osborne and Mike Krushelnyski also scored for the Maple Leafs. Darin Kimble, Dave Poulin, Adam Oates and Dave Reid scored for the Bruins.

New York Rangers 6, San Jose 4--The Rangers got second-period goals from Adam Graves, Sergei Nemchinov, Alexei Kovalev and Joe Cirella to take a 6-2 lead and held on at Daly City.

San Jose made it closer with power play goals by Hubie McDonough and Johan Garpenlov in the third period.
