One woman was shot dead and another was booked on suspicion of murder after they tried to rob an off-duty reserve sheriff’s deputy at gunpoint Sunday, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

The shootout began in East Los Angeles early Sunday when three women allegedly tried to hold up the deputy after he agreed to give them a ride in his van.

Once inside, one woman pulled a semiautomatic pistol and demanded the deputy’s van and valuables, officials said. He got out as the woman ran around to confront him with the gun.

They exchanged shots, and the woman was shot in the chest. She died at the scene. Sheriff’s deputies did not identify her. The deputy, whom authorities also refused to name, was slightly wounded, but a sheriff’s spokesman had no details on his condition.

Kristina Rigalardo, 26, was booked on suspicion of murder under a state law that holds an accomplice responsible for deaths during a crime. The third woman escaped.

Deputies said the three may have committed other robberies because large sums of money were found on Rigalardo and the dead woman.
