VENTURA : Water Rationing Ended by Council
After about three years of strict conservation, the Ventura City Council on Monday voted unanimously to end mandatory water rationing.
Water users will no longer pay stiff penalties for consuming more than their allotments. The fines--some as high as 10 times the normal use rate--were imposed in March, 1990, because of the statewide drought.
City officials said two years of above-normal rainfall has replenished ground-water basins and the Ventura River, two of the city’s primary sources of water. Lake Casitas reservoir, another major source, is close to spilling over.
Residents are also conserving on a regular basis now, which makes penalties unnecessary, city officials said.
About 99.4% of single-family residences used less than their water allotments between November, 1991, and November, 1992, city officials said.
