1993 PREP PREVIEW / BOYS SWIMMING : LOS ALAMITOS
Coach: Tony Martinho (second year)
1992: Empire League champions; finished fifth in the 3-A meet.
Key returners: Tim Campbell, So.; Daniel Lupash, Sr., David Michaels, Sr.; Geoffrey Olson, Sr.; Eric Ploessel, So.; Eric Roberts, Sr.
Key newcomers: Tim Haney, Fr.; Tim Sylvester, Jr.
Outlook: The Griffins have plenty of depth and talent. Michaels and Olson each qualified in two events at the Southern Section 3-A finals last year. Michaels finished third in the 500-yard freestyle; Olson was fourth in the 100 butterfly. Also back is Roberts, who was third in the 100 breaststroke, and Ploessel, who made the consolation final in the 500 freestyle. Haney, a solid junior national swimmer, might be the best of the bunch even though he’s only a freshman. “He can swim anything,” Martinho said. “I expect we’ll be using him in the distance freestyles.” Haney will have Daniel Lupash back, who was questionable this season because of a back injury. He finished fifth in the 200 individual medley and sixth in the 100 butterfly at the 3-A meet last year. Lupash was also the Empire League’s swimmer of the year last season.
