A man who was kidnaped at gunpoint outside a convenience store Monday, forced into the trunk of his car and held for more than 24 hours escaped Tuesday evening by breaking through the back seat when his attacker left, police said.

Daniel Barrie, 30, of Upland ran to an office building in the 2500 block of North Main Street about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday shortly after his attacker got out of the car in a parking lot, said Santa Ana Police Sgt. Dick Faust.

“He heard the suspect walk away, waited a while then knocked down the back seat and got out of the car,” Faust said. “He then ran to an office building and called police.”

Barrie, who was treated by paramedics then taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Orange with undisclosed injuries, told police he was worried about his family and was still too shaken to talk about his ordeal.

Barrie, a resident of Upland, told police he was parked in front of a convenience store on Grand Street in Lake Elsinore at 2 p.m. Monday when a man with a gun suddenly opened the passenger door and got in.

“He was told to drive up on the Ortega Highway,” Faust said. “When they got to a wooded area, the suspect kicked the man in the ribs and put him in the trunk of the car and drove off.

“The next thing he knew, he was in the garage of a house but he has no idea where. He then passed out from fatigue or fear, and when he woke up this morning, he was still in the trunk.”

Faust said Barrie was then placed in the front of the car and told to go the bank and withdraw $40 from his bank account.

“After they drove away from the bank, the suspect stopped the car, then put him back into the trunk. Some time later, they stopped in a parking lot at the corner of Owens Drive and Main Street where he was able to escape, Faust said.

Police searched the immediate area but the kidnaper escaped.

“We don’t know where he is or if he had a car waiting for him,” Faust said.
