COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CS Northridge Sweeps Fullerton in Softball Behind Blake’s Pitching

Sophomore Kathy Blake picked up a victory and a save Wednesday as Cal State Northridge swept Cal State Fullerton, 4-3 in eight innings and 2-1, in a nonconference softball doubleheader at Fullerton.

In the first game, Blake was called on with two out in the eighth inning and Northridge leading 4-3. She struck out the only batter she faced to end the game and preserve the victory for Amy Windmiller (3-1).

Blake, a right-hander from Paso Robles High, pitched a complete game in the second game, allowing three hits and striking out eight.

Catcher Missy Cress was four for six in the two games for Northridge (7-1). Fullerton shortstop Denise Dewalt had five hits in seven at-bats.

Fullerton, which was playing its opening games of the season, led, 1-0, after four innings in the first game, but Northridge tied the score in the top of the fifth, then scored three runs in the top of the eighth.

The Titans scored two in the bottom of the eighth before Blake came in to record the save.

The Matadors took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the second game.

In other softball games:

Antelope Valley 2, Riverside 1 (9 innings)--Cheree Rodgers of Antelope Valley singled home Heather Griffith with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning of the nonconference game.

Heather Meyer (2-0) pitched a four-hitter for the Marauders (3-0). She struck out 11 and walked one.

BASEBALL

Valley 8, Glendale 6--Ozzie Areu was four for four and scored two runs for host Valley in a Western State Conference game.

Valley (3-5, 2-0) trailed, 6-2, after 5 1/2 innings, but the Monarchs scored six runs in the sixth for the victory.

David Stevenson’s two-out, bases-loaded single gave Valley a 7-6 lead and Areu scored all the way from first on the play on a Glendale throwing error.

Harbor 7, Mission 1--Free Spirit starter Raul Torres walked five batters in four innings and three of them scored, as Mission (9-2) dropped a nonconference game.

Jose Gallegos provided Mission’s offense with two hits, including a solo home run, his first of the season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Southern Utah 59, Cal State Northridge 51--Thunderbird guard Angie Alvey had 12 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists to lead Southern Utah to a 2-0 season sweep of the host Matadors in a nonconference game.

Northridge (5-19) lost its second consecutive game despite a career-high 18 points and nine rebounds from guard Janel Vega. Jody Bittner and Haily Griffith each added 10 points. The Matadors trailed, 28-25, at the half and shot 28.2% from the field for the game.

Cherri Shurtliff added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Thunderbirds (9-14).

Ventura 80, Desert 50--Cori Herman scored 25 points to lead the Pirates (25-4) to a first-round victory in the Southern California regionals. Tara Sanders added 12 points and seven assists for Ventura.

The Pirates will meet the winner of the Chaffey-Cuesta game in the second round.

Golden West 110, Antelope Valley 64--Bernice Atkinson scored 16 points and Christi Huff added 14, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Antelope Valley from losing to the No. 1-seeded team in the first round of the Southern California regionals.

Sasha Garrison, the Foothill Conference player of the year, added 12 points for Antelope Valley (16-13).

Cinnamon Basco scored a game-high 35 points for Golden West.
