The San Buenaventura Boxing Club will stage an exhibition and fund-raiser today featuring former Olympic and Golden Gloves boxer Ruben Juarez.

The event will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at the Westpark Community Center, 450 W. Harrison St., in Ventura. Tickets are $2.

After winning the Featherweight Division at the 1990 Pan American Games in Canada, Juarez lost in the final round of the 1992 Olympic trials to gold medal winner Oscar de la Hoya. Juarez was selected as an alternate on the Olympic team. The 21-year-old Ventura native is a graduate of Rio Mesa High School and now lives in Oxnard.

The exhibition also will feature local professional fighters Sal Lopez and Johnny Ramriez. Lopez, an Oxnard resident, is a 1988 Tennessee Golden Gloves Champion while Ramirez is the 1987 California Gold Gloves Champion.

Proceeds from the exhibition will help offset the costs for uniforms, equipment and tournament travel.

The boxing club is a cooperative effort between the city of Ventura and the Avenue Athletic Assn.
