New York Ranger goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck would have liked to have made one more save Friday night against the Calgary Flames.

Gary Suter scored with five seconds to play in regulation to send the game into overtime, where the Flames and Rangers tied, 4-4, at Calgary.

After a scramble in front of the net, Suter kicked the puck and then lifted it over Vanbiesbrouck for the tying goal at 19:55. Vanbiesbrouck made 43 saves in regulation.

“When you give one up late in the game it’s frustrating,” Vanbiesbrouck said. “I happened in Vancouver, too. It’s tough for the guys.”

Sergei Zubov scored at 2:38 of the third period to give the Rangers a 4-3 lead. It was his seventh goal.

New York killed a five-minute major penalty on the Flames’ Mike Gartner in the third period to keep the lead until Suter’s goal.

Gartner scored his 37th goal at 34 seconds into the second period and the Rangers’ Adam Graves tied it with his 27th at 6:53 of the period on a power play.

Frank Musil, Al MacInnis, and Joe Nieuwendyk scored first-period goals against Vanbiesbrouck for a 3-0 lead, two on the power play. It was Nieuwendyk’s 28th of the season.

Tony Amonte got the Rangers on the scoreboard with his 25th goal at 19:54 of the first period on the power play.
