OUTLOOK

Wilson is the Spartans’ third head coach in as many years but inherits a team with some potential. The Spartans finished third a year ago and could improve or drop, depending on how well they hit the ball. Henderson has a lively fastball and struck out 103 batters last season. He was 3-6 as a sophomore and 5-4 last season and can be counted on for quality starts this year. Parker and Brady should make the Spartans tough to hit. Strapp, who was the quarterback on the football team, is as good an infielder as there is in the league. He has good hands, hit .419 last season and also scored 26 runs. Pejouhian has good speed and should improve at the plate. He had three triples last season. The defense is solid, especially up the middle. Strapp and McMahon make a good double-play tandem. The Spartans’ problems would appear to be on offense. Someone will have to fill the void left by Jason Johnson, who drove in 27 runs a year ago. Just who that is at the moment is anyone’s guess. The Spartans’ season keys on one or two players developing into run producers.
