OUTLOOK

The Knights have what one coach calls the deepest pitching staff in the league, but McMenamin is concerned by their lack of experience. With Reed, Schalip and Wright all back from last season’s league runner-up, McMenamin shouldn’t have any mound worries. Alvarez, a three-year starter at catcher, will handle the pitchers in capable fashion. And Santivanez will pitch in additions to his duties as third baseman and designated hitter. Fine pitching is just one reason many coaches believe the Knights are among the favorites to win the league championship. This despite losing one of Orange County’s finest hitters, Kyle Evans, to graduation. Last season, Evans batted .426 with a county-leading nine home runs and 32 RBIs and was named league co-MVP along with El Dorado’s Shawn Holcomb. There’s no question the Knights will have trouble finding that kind of production this season, which is another potential trouble spot for the team.
