SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Canyon was held scoreless in the first half, then used the one-two punch of Kim Campbell and Krista Broughton to defeat Sunny Hills, 4-0, Tuesday in the Division II girls’ soccer semifinals at Canyon High.

The Comanches (25-2), ranked No. 2 in the county, have shut out 22 opponents.

Sunny Hills (20-3-2) beat Canyon to nearly every ball in the first half, but Canyon goalie Tina Thompson had four of her seven saves to keep the Lancers off the scoreboard.

Less than five minutes into the second half, Campbell’s shot got past Sunny Hills goalie Danielle Broschak, who had been drawn out. The ball hit the right goal post, bounced in front of the goal, and Broughton followed with a shot into the left side of the net, ending the Lancers’ 185 consecutive minutes of scoreless defensive play.

Ten minutes later, Broughton took the ball away from Sunny Hills sweeper Megan Desales and passed it to Campbell, whose kick into the left corner of the goal got above a diving Broschak.

“After we got two (goals), I was pretty comfortable,” Canyon Coach John Williams said. “We still had 25 minutes to go, but I was comfortable we weren’t going to allow two goals.”

With five minutes left, Desales, trying to help defend Sunny Hills’ goal, fell in front of Broughton, who tapped the ball around her and scored her second goal. Just before the final whistle, Campbell, who wound her way down the field past five or six defenders, passed to Broughton, who booted the ball into the left corner.

“We played well, but then we had a breakdown. (Canyon) scored once and we lost our confidence,” Sunny Hills Coach Kenn Gordon said. “After that, it’s tough to come back against such a good team. You have to be pushing to score, and that opens up a lot of chances.”

Canyon will face Arcadia, a 1-0 winner over Los Alamitos Tuesday, in Saturday’s 2 p.m. final at Gahr High in Cerritos.

Williams said his team is physically ready.

“All our real hard workouts are behind us,” he said. “We’ll just concentrate on the little things--like not getting injured in practice.”
