Teemu Selanne of the Winnipeg Jets scored three times to set an NHL record for goals by a rookie, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Quebec Nordiques Tuesday night at Winnipeg, Canada.

The Nordiques won, 7-4, despite the hat trick by Selanne, who has scored 54 goals, one more than Mike Bossy scored for the New York Islanders during the 1977-78 season.

The record-setting goal by the 22-year-old Finn came when he beat Quebec goalie Stephane Fiset to a long lead pass, then reached around him to poke the puck gently into the net.

The goal, at 9:26 of the third period, gave the Jets a 4-3 lead--but Quebec scored four goals in a span of 3:34 to win.

But it was Selanne the crowd of 14,397 came to see.

It roared its approval and flooded the ice with hats while his teammates rushed onto the ice to hug him after the milestone goal. Selanne celebrated by tossing one glove in the air and pumping his stick like a rifle.

The game was stopped to allow Jet owner Barry Shenkarow to present Selanne with a golden stick.

Vancouver 3, Washington 3--The Canucks blanked the Capitals’ power play in overtime to preserve the tie at Landover, Md.

After Robert Kron scored the tying goal with 2:13 to play in regulation, the Canucks had to kill off a three-minute power play in the extra period. Washington got only two shots with the man advantage.

The Capitals failed to score during six manpower advantages.

N.Y. Islanders 3, Detroit 2--Pierre Turgeon scored his 42nd and 43rd goals to lead the Islanders at Uniondale, N.Y.
