Rawls returns seven starters from a team that tied for the league title and reached the 3-A quarterfinals, where it lost to Tustin. McHale (.380), a two-time all-league performer, will be the Argonauts’ No. 1 pitcher and will play shortstop. Rawls said of Henson (.320), a three-year varsity letterman: “He’s pretty much my assistant coach, he’s been around so long.” But Rawls said his team’s biggest asset is its speed. Sebreros (.400) and Vargas (.370) are the fastest of a group that Rawls hopes will steal 80 bases. Moreno (3-2, 2.12 ERA) will be the No. 2 pitcher and Loken also will pitch. But Rawls said pitching is not his team’s strength. “To be effective, we need to hit the ball,” he said. “We don’t have that dominating pitcher. I hope experience at the plate will compensate for that.” Greg Pines, ex-Santiago coach Myron Pines’ son, will play as a freshman and should give Rawls some pop off the bench. “His offensive skills exceed his defensive skills. I think he’s been swinging the bat for a long time.”
