OUTLOOK
The Irish return 13 players, including nine who started at one time or another, from a team that tied for the league title with Garden Grove, then lost to Laguna Hills in the first round of the 3-A playoffs. But Pascal did lose his best pitcher Scott Jones, the Garden Grove League player of the year, and his catcher, Devin Underwood. Kennedy should stay strong on the mound with Clark (6-2, 2.10), a first team all-league pick last year and Westermann (2-0, 0.95). Gonzalez and Sewell (four saves) round out the staff. But finding a replacement for Underwood, a three-year starter, is Pascal’s biggest concern. Four players are battling for the starting spot. Cummins, an all-league BASEBALL player who hasn’t caught in two years, is the leading candidate. “If we have a catcher step up, we’re going to be in the top third of the league,” Pascal said. “If not, we’re going to be chasing the ball till it stops rolling.” The Irish will have speed in the outfield with Morris, Guthrie, Vetica and Gonzalez.
