The Colonists return four starters and are traditionally tough in league, reaching the playoffs five of the last six seasons. Chwan began last season as the backup catcher but became the starter because of injuries to senior Jason Deleu. Chwan struggled at first, hitting .065, but raised his average to .275 by the end of the season. “He was only a sophomore and he was pushed in there as a starter,” Torres said. “He played pretty well the last two rounds of league.” The return of Buzila and Zuniga also should help. Buzila played varsity baseball as a sophomore, but sat out last season to concentrate on football. “I’m glad he’s back,” Torres said. “He’s a real plus. The kids all look up to him.” Zuniga played on the freshman team, sat out the last two seasons for personal reasons, and is back this year. Covarrubias is one of the league’s top athletes, leading the football team to a share of the league title last fall. His speed and strong arm will be put to good use in center field. The pitching staff should be solid with Navarrette, a left-hander who was 4-0 as a freshman and 4-2 last season.
