SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team relied on its tried and tested ways Thursday night, but the Toros were unable to withstand the might of Cal Poly Pomona.

“We knew exactly what they were going to do,” Dominguez Hills forward Erika Manning said. “It didn’t matter who we played, we just did the same old stuff.”

The Toros, however, could have used improvement in several areas in a 62-46 loss before 538 at Cal Poly Pomona, their 30th consecutive loss to the Broncos in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. tournament game.

Pomona (24-2), the 12-time defending CCAA champion, will play Cal State San Bernardino (18-9), a 74-72 overtime winner over UC Riverside, in the championship Saturday at Cal State Bakersfield.

“You have to run into them sooner or later when you talk about winning conference,” Toro Coach Van Girard said. “Now was as good of a time as any. It’s a tremendous challenge any time you meet them.”

The Toros appeared up for the challenge early in the game.

Manning scored all her 12 points in the first half to help keep the Toros (15-11) in contention. Dominguez Hills trailed, 37-32, at halftime.

The fourth-seeded Toros raced to a 9-3 lead. Manning, a 5-foot-10 senior, scored nine of Dominguez Hills’ first 11 points.

“They just got on a roll,” Pomona Coach Darlene May said.

Mildred Conston and Jennifer Harney scored a game-high 20 points and Sylvia Castaneda had five assists for Pomona. Dionne Vanlandingham had 12 points and seven rebounds for Dominguez Hills.

The Broncos held the Toros scoreless for more than three minutes to break a 24-24 tie and take a 35-26 lead with 2:51 left before halftime.
