HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Crespi Romps Behind Suppan in Opener

Jeff Suppan allowed four hits, struck out 10 batters and did not allow a run in six innings to lead Crespi High to a 14-1 victory over Torrance in a first-round game of the El Segundo tournament Friday at Valley College.

Suppan (1-0), a senior right-hander who has signed a letter of intent with UCLA, walked one and did not allow a runner to reach second base until the sixth inning.

Brad Farlow, Jeff Christensen and Brad Wright each had two hits for Crespi (1-0).

Farlow, who had a triple, drove in three runs and scored once. Christensen had two runs batted in and two runs scored, and Wright scored three runs and drove in another.

In other El Segundo tournament first-round games:

Simi Valley 16, Hawthorne 3--Britten Pond hit for the cycle, drove in three runs and scored four for visiting Simi Valley. Kevin Nykoluk had two hits, including a homer, and drove in two run while scoring three, and Jason Alcala added two hits and three RBIs. Junior right-hander Bill Scheffels went five innings, allowing six hits and one earned run.

Burroughs 2, El Segundo 1--Josh Cartee singled with two out and the bases loaded in the seventh for host Burroughs. El Segundo tied the score in the seventh on a wild pitch. Holland Cowger pitched six innings for Burroughs, struck out three and walked one.

Carson 3, Westlake 1--Two costly errors by Westlake spoiled a strong pitching performance by sophomore right-hander Todd Singleton, who allowed three hits and struck out five in five innings. Rob Murray went two for three.

WESTSIDE TOURNAMENT

Hart 8, Loyola 0--Senior right-hander Gary Stephenson allowed four hits over six innings, struck out 10 and walked one to lead Hart at Loyola. Aron Miyata had two hits and two RBIs to lead Hart.

Chaminade 11, Rio Mesa 9--Joel Orme’s three-run homer in the seventh inning propelled visiting Chaminade in a first-round game.

Orme, who also had a two-run double, finished with five RBIs. Mike Haugh pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one earned run, to earn the victory.

Rudy Swanger, Charlie Boch and Victor Moreno each had two hits for Rio Mesa, which scored eight runs in the fourth.

Taft 12, Saugus 8--Host Taft jumped to a 12-2 lead and coasted behind a 16-hit attack.

Warren Stewart had three hits and three RBIs and was the winning pitcher for Taft. Mike Ferguson had three hits, including two triples. Stacy Kleiner, Josh Irving and Adam Shotland each had two hits for Taft. Bobby Cowan hit a three-run homer for Saugus.

Channel Islands 11, Montclair Prep 9--Montclair Prep pitchers yielded 11 walks and hit three batters in a game called after six innings because of darkness.

Brian Ortiz knocked in the go-ahead run as Channel Islands rallied for four runs in the sixth.

Hueneme 5, Harvard Westlake 0--Juan Ponce, who had one home run last season, hit two in this opener. Juan Tostado and Robert Lopez combined for a shutout.

Sylmar 5, Culver City 3--Art Diaz had two hits and John Bohman allowed five hits over five innings to lead Sylmar.

SAN FERNANDO TOURNAMENT

Thousand Oaks 9, San Fernando 2--Clint Harris had two doubles and two triples to lead Thousand Oaks (1-0) at San Fernando.

Sophomore right-hander Tim Baron (1-0) went the distance for the Lancers and allowed four hits. Ricky Anguiano homered for San Fernando (1-1).

Kennedy 10, Poly 2--Rick Nadeau was three for three and scored three times to lead host Kennedy (2-0).

Granada Hills 14, Grant 9--Gaby Halcovich had four hits and scored three runs for Granada Hills in a second-round game at Grant. Robb Weinzimer had two hits and three RBIs for Granada Hills (1-1).

Franklin 8, Cleveland 1--Outfielder Mike Locke had two hits for Cleveland (0-1-1) at home.

Monroe 5, Agoura 2--Behind fifth-inning doubles by John Shellabarger and Joel Zamudio, Monroe came from behind to win.

LOARA TOURNAMENT

Cypress 6, Newbury Park 4--Catcher Jeff Bennett had three of Newbury Park’s seven hits in a first-round game at Cypress.

NONLEAGUE

Hoover 13, St. Francis 2--Nate Dishington was one for two with four RBIs, and Andrew Spencer had two hits and three RBIs to lead visiting Hoover in an opener.

Littlerock 4, Mojave 0--Senior right-hander Toine Jager tossed a two-hitter and struck out 11 for Littlerock in an opener. Raul Rosetti stole three bases and had two of Littlerock’s six hits.

Village Christian 13, Bell-Jeff 1--Brett Borden hit a three-run home run to highlight a six-run first inning for Village Christian in a opener at Tujunga Field.

Calabasas 13, Highland 6--Billy Hoover had three hits and David Jacobs and Colin Fields each had two for Calabasas. Josh Morton hit safely for the 21st consecutive game.
