OUTLOOK

Munsell enters his second season at Laguna Beach after a successful stint at Trabuco Hills. He took over a team with an inexperienced infield in Borella, Garner and McDonald. But all three players developed into standouts by the start of league, and the Artists finished third behind co-champions Laguna Hills and Trabuco Hills. Borella and Garner were first-team all-league selections, and McDonald was a second-team pick. Borella proved to be one of the league’s best-hitting infielders, batting .406. Garner hit .391 and McDonald hit .321. Don’t be surprised to see the Artists in the thick of the league race. And Munsell isn’t shy about sharing his expectations. “With seven starters returning, we expect to contend for the league title,” he said. The Artists lost three key players to graduation--pitchers Jason Abraham and Tom Ravensberg as well as catcher Mike Allen. Garner, a left-hander who has made a full recovery from shoulder surgery last season, will pitch and play first base. Ryan Allen and Kimble have been promoted from the junior varsity to boost the pitching staff. “Our pitching should be strong,” Munsell said.
