The Dallas Mavericks had to wait 54 games to get first-round draft pick Jim Jackson into a uniform.

They will have to wait longer for him to help them win.

Despite Jackson’s presence in the lineup Friday night, the Mavericks took another step toward the NBA’s all-time futility record, losing to the Houston Rockets, 105-86, at Dallas.

It was the Mavericks’ 13th consecutive loss, dropping their record to 4-51, a pace that would break the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers’ mark of 9-73.

The victory was Houston’s ninth in a row.

Jackson, the No. 4 pick in last summer’s draft, played 26 minutes. He had six points, four assists and five turnovers after ending his holdout Thursday. Jackson, whose six-year contract, worth about $20 million, makes him the highest-paid rookie guard in NBA history, showed the effects of his layoff.

“I felt like I was just playing,” said Jackson, appearing in his first real game since the NCAA tournament last March. “I felt more comfortable as I kept going.”

Hakeem Olajuwon led eight Rockets in double figures with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

San Antonio 107, Chicago 102--The Bulls didn’t have Michael Jordan, but they weren’t concerned.

Not after taking a 21-point first-quarter lead over the Spurs at Chicago.

But San Antonio came back to tie the score and went on to win in overtime, when Dale Ellis scored seven of his 29 points.

David Robinson scored 28 points for the Spurs.

Scottie Pippen had 39 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists for the Bulls, who were playing their second consecutive game without Jordan. The NBA’s leading scorer is hospitalized because of an infected corn.

The loss ended a seven-game winning streak. The Bulls are 1-6 without Jordan over the last 6 1/2 seasons.

Boston 105, Detroit 101--The Celtics’ Kevin McHale made a short follow shot with 23 seconds to play at Boston and the Pistons’ Isiah Thomas blew two subsequent chances to tie the score.

Kevin Gamble had 26 points on 12-of-17 shooting for Boston, which has won its last seven home games.

Joe Dumars had 24 points and Dennis Rodman had 19 rebounds for Detroit, which has lost 12 consecutive road games.

Phoenix 130, Sacramento 122--Cedric Ceballos scored 14 of his 23 points during the third quarter, helping the Suns pull away from the Kings at Phoenix.

Charles Barkley, who had 32 points in 31 minutes, made three of five three-point shots during the third quarter.

Milwaukee 109, Orlando 91--The Bucks proved the way to stop Shaquille O’Neal is to play three men on him and hope.

It worked during O’Neal’s first Milwaukee appearance.

“We just kept sending a lot of bodies at Shaquille,” Buck Coach Mike Dunleavy said.

O’Neal still had 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bucks played most of the second half without Frank Brickowski, who suffered a neck injury, and Danny Schayes, who had five fouls.

Blue Edwards scored 21 points and Eric Murdock scored 20 to lead Milwaukee.

Charlotte 94, Portland 92--David Wingate’s 15-foot shot off a rebound with five seconds to play at Portland gave the Hornets their first-ever victory over the Trail Blazers.

Cliff Robinson had 29 points and 13 rebounds for Portland, which has lost 10 of its last 15 games.

Larry Johnson scored 28 points and Kendall Gill had 18 for Charlotte.
