SOUTH-CENTRAL : Residents Back Rebuilding Store
Residents living near a riot-damaged market that sold beer and wine say they support its rebuilding because there are few convenience stores in the area.
On Monday, a city zoning administrator and Planning Commission examiner will take public testimony concerning a request to rebuild the Family Market at 5501 S. Normandie Ave. The input will be used to compile a report that will be presented to the Planning Commission for a final decision on the request.
“I think they should rebuild it,” said Pat Malloy, who runs an income-tax service near the site and has lived in the area more than 20 years. “The neighborhood needs it. There’s no place around here to buy groceries.”
Although she opposes the sale of alcoholic beverages at local mini-markets, Connie Pineda, who lives a block from the store, said she supported this market’s reconstruction. “If you ran out of something, you could just walk there and get what you need,” Pineda said.
Denny In Song, the owner and operator of the store, could not be reached for comment.
The hearing will be at 9 a.m. Monday in Room 516 at City Hall; 200 N. Spring St.
