COLLEGE SWIMMING PAC-10 MEN’S FINALS : Stanford Wins 12th Title in Row

Stanford tuned up for defense of its NCAA men’s swimming and diving title by winning its 12th consecutive Pacific 10 Conference championship Saturday night.

The Cardinal won three events during the final night of competition in the three-day meet at the King County Aquatic Center. Stanford rolled up 865 points to 620 for runner-up UCLA.

Stanford set a meet record in taking the 400-yard freestyle relay in 2:54.10. Cardinal sophomore Kurt Grote set a meet mark in the 200 breaststroke in 1:56.93. And Stanford’s Derek Weatherford won the 200 backstroke in 1:43.78.

California freshman Ugur Tanner, a native of Turkey, won the 200 butterfly in 1:44.92 to qualify for the NCAA championship meet March 25-27 in Indianapolis.

Arizona State was third in the team scoring with 517 points, followed by Cal with 462, USC with 454, Arizona with 421 and host Washington at 149.

Washington State, Oregon and Oregon State do not have men’s swimming teams.
