Here’s another league team with strong pitching. “This is a real strong pitching league,” said Canary, who is in his 13th season at Dana Hills. “This is a real good league. It really brings out the best in you. You could be a pretty good team and still finish fifth or sixth.” The Dolphins’ hopes rest on the capable right arm of Etherton, who had a standout sophomore season. In 40 innings last year, he went 3-2 with a 1.59 earned-run average and 44 strikeouts. And Canary said he only got better over the summer, leading his Norwalk-based Mickey Mantle League team to a national championship at Hartford, Conn. He won two games and was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Youth might catch up with the Dolphins, however. “Our inexperience will be a problem,” Canary said. “Good pitching and good catching will keep us close.” Still, he’s not about to count any of the six teams out in the playoff race. “I think we’ll be more competitive than we look on paper,” he said. With only three seniors among the team’s top eight players, the key will be how quickly the younger players adapt and adjust. Canary hopes the Dolphins jell quickly. If so, they could be one of the league’s dark horses.
