OUTLOOK

If South Coast League coaches thought they were getting a break with Irvine’s departure to the Sea View League, they were mistaken. Mater Dei, the Vaqueros’ replacement, figures to be just as troublesome. Irvine advanced to the Division 4-A championship game, losing to West Covina South Hills, 6-5. Mater Dei lost to El Dorado, 13-3, in the 5-A quarterfinals. Barajas, Frankel and McDonald form a strong nucleus for the Monarchs, who won the final Angelus League title last season. “We’re going to be young and inexperienced, but pretty strong on the mound,” Ickes said. “Overall, this is one of the strongest pitching staffs we’ve had in awhile. Offense is going to be the question mark.” The move to a new league probably won’t be as difficult as some might think, Ickes said. “We’re just playing new people,” he said. “Maybe we’ll have more rivalries because of the public-versus-private thing.” The new league’s style of play won’t be dramatically different, though Ickes expects to see more attention paid to bunting and hit and running.
