Whittier Christian’s most heralded player, Borders, returns for her senior season as the only girl playing baseball in the Olympic League. Borders, a left-hander who posted a 3-4 record and 3.25 earned-run average last season, earned a partial scholarship to play baseball for Southern California College next season. When she begins playing for the NAIA school, it is believed she will be the second woman to play collegiate baseball. “We’re all excited for her,” Randall said. “But she gets no special treatment. She’s just another good player for us.” The Heralds have a lot of good players coming back. They include Hoffman, the team’s leadoff hitter and team leader in batting average last season, and Shirk, the team’s RBI leader last season. The Heralds also have depth. Bloom might miss the season with shoulder problems, but Acala can ably take over at catcher, Randall said. “Our strengths are experience and hard work,” he said. “I think this team will be disappointed if we don’t finish second or better.”
