OUTLOOK

Steele may have a tough road ahead. The first-year coach has to follow a season in which the Flames finished as tri-champions of the Arrowhead League and SCC has no seniors on this year’s squad. “I wasn’t disappointed when I saw that,” Steele said. “Just give me nine guys, and we’ll go out and do the best we can.” Steele will employ five pitchers in a rotating system, led by Wood, Felton and Allen. The three combined to one-hit Ontario Christian, while walking two, in a 5-1 victory Friday in the Flames’ season opener. Castillo and Baker round out Steele’s rotation, and Steele said the Flames’ versatility allows him to move players around frequently. “I don’t know how we’ll finish in the league. I’m just looking at the season one game at a time,” Steele said. “I’ve been impressed so far with the work they’ve put in.” Since the Flames have all underclassmen on the squad except Matt Cabellero and Felton, Steele said he will stress long-term results. “We want to have a good, positive, learning environment,” Steele said. “We want to start building a solid program, including a JV program for the incoming freshmen.”
