Anaheim’s NHL expansion team began interviewing candidates for general manager Monday, with Bob McCammon, the former Philadelphia Flyer and Vancouver Canuck coach, among perhaps six contenders.

McCammon, president, general manager and coach of the Western Hockey League’s Tri-City (Wash.) team, checked into a Universal City hotel Monday night and said he is scheduled to speak to team officials today and meet with them Wednesday.

Tony Tavares, introduced last week as president of the Mighty Ducks, said interviews have begun with perhaps as many as six candidates, but he declined to discuss candidates because some are under contract to other NHL teams.

Among other possible contenders for the job are Jack Ferreira, the former San Jose Shark and Minnesota North Star general manager, and Pierre Gauthier, director of scouting for the Quebec Nordiques. Both men have had contact with Anaheim team officials either directly or through an intermediary.

Tavares also has suggested that there are other candidates who wish to have their involvement remain quiet.

McCammon and Tavares are acquainted from their days in Philadelphia, where Tavares formerly worked as the president of Spectacor Management Group, a facilities management group that counts the Flyers’ building, the Spectrum, among its clients.

Though McCammon had two tenures as an NHL coach, he is most highly regarded as a judge of talent, and his knowledge of the junior leagues would be valuable to an expansion team.

McCammon was general manager of the Flyers in 1983-84, and is largely credited with the selections of Peter Zezel, now of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Rick Tocchet, now of the Pittsburgh Penguins, in the 1983 draft.

McCammon took over as coach of the Flyers during the latter part of the 1981-82 season and coached them the next two seasons, compiling a 119-68-31 record for a .617 winning percentage. However, his playoff record with the Flyers was 1-9.

McCammon was the Canucks’ coach from 1987-88 until he was fired in midseason during 1991. His Vancouver teams had a record of 102-155-36, a .409 winning percentage, and were 3-4 in the playoffs.
