$55-Million Jackpot Brings On a Case of Lotto Fever
After months of lottery doldrums, Californians caught a touch of lotto fever Tuesday as they gambled on the chance of winning a $55-million jackpot.
The jackpot is the fifth-largest in the California lottery’s history and the biggest this fiscal year, spokeswoman Jana Matal said. Last September, three winning tickets split a $52-million prize, Matal said.
California’s largest jackpot was a world-record $118.8 million in April, 1991, she said.
Lotto sales were seven to eight times normal on Tuesday, boosting the jackpot from earlier projections of $51 million, Matal said. Saturday through Monday sales reached $7 million, already more than typical for the twice-weekly drawing, with the two biggest days left to go.
If one person wins today, he or she would receive a before-tax payment of $2.55 million a year for 20 years.
The drawing will be held at 7:57 p.m.
